The Shark Fund Endowment INitiative

The current endowment goals will establish interest funding equal to current foundational needs for middle and high school, plus some foundational support for elementary school programming.. From there, we can grow the program and continue to enrich programs beyond those foundational needs.

Supporting the elementary school program pathway in Malibu will engage students early and increase participation at the secondary school level.

The plan is to work with founders to launch the endowments with a significant donation, and then allow contributions to grow those endowments through careful financial planning to balance current needs while investing in the future.

Endowments enable funding of programs forever from the interest paid out on the principal amount, which remains untouched.   Our goal is to establish at least one endowment by 2025.

Endowment Goal:  $3,000,000

Target Annual Interest Funding:  $150,000  

Arts Angels: A volunteer parent led group that helps support and promote the visual and performing arts program at Malibu Middle and High School.  

• Annual Budget: $100,000 
• Covers the cost of theater productions, teacher art supplies, music performance needs.

Elementary Schools: Additional VAPA enrichment is currently funded by the PTA’s at each school and focuses on plays, art instruction, and visiting interactive performances.  

• Annual Budget: $50,000 ($25,000 per elementary school) to supplement current efforts.

Endowment Goal:  $8,000,000

Target Annual Interest Funding:  $400,000

Athletic Booster Club (ABC): A volunteer parent organization which supports athletics at the High School level

• Annual Budget: $200,000 
• Funds uniforms, assistant coaching, travel when not covered by the district.

Athletics Pathway: Establish athletics programs for elementary and middle school students to support mental and physical health, life success, and encourage athletics at all ages.

• Annual Funding: $200,000
• Funds an Athletics coordinator to bring existing community organizations (AYSO, MLL, Malibu City) closer to campuses and the creation athletic programs where needed + coaches, equipment, uniforms and league participation.

Endowment Goal:  $4,800,000

Target Annual Interest Funding:  $240,000

PTSA: A parent volunteer organization which works to positively impact the lives of all children and families through advocacy.

• Annual Budget: $140,000 
• Funds teacher supplies, student organizations, community gatherings, water stations, and more.

Incremental Staff and Staffed Programs:  Funding above and beyond what the district is currently funding.

• MHS Annual Budget: $50,000 (Community Service Staff Role)
• Webster Annual Budget: $25,000 (Computer Education)
• MES Annual Budget: $25,000 (Marine Science Program)
